Same here, on Lucid LTS, but I am not able to open the same .pdf's in Adobe
Reader (latest version) either, so I am wondering if it is a dependency
problem, being either not present or not updated? I have alternately gotten the
"file is damaged" error message-
downloading any .pdf's from Interne

evince and kpdf fail to open a pdf which works in
the error in xpdf is:

this is poppler, not evince, marking as such
ps. i can also confirm that the document opens nicely in acroread 8.1.3
