i have same problem on a laptop native resolution is 1440x900 after installing ubuntu, it starts with vesa driver and 800x600 maximum :/ sis driver causes X not starting at boot i only could create a xorg.conf file and add several modelines into, to abtain a poor 1280x768 display -- sis 771/671

Hello Since I reported this bug I had to change to Xubuntu 8.10 32-bit, where a sis display driver is available and working quite solidly, will try to get a little time post it on my site, I was already getting eyesight problems out of the vesa driver stripes and fed up of back and forth ctrl-alt-
