attached as "/var/log/LATEST.Xorg.0.log" to this comment.
I do not think I have made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Please let me know if there is a way to check.

The hardware specs are:
Intel (R0 Core 2 Duo E 6750 2.66 Ghz
2 GB RAM
Intel (R) G33/31 Express Chipset Family Intel (R) GMA 3100
I thought a the fact that I have installed all the software 'updates'
might help.

I just remembered some details which may be helpful.
During the 'upgrade' from 8.04 to 8.10 there were 2 error message both
as a 'pop-up' and also in that 'black box with white text' which gives
information on installation. However, I quickly forgot about it as
everything worked after installation
