Er I need to clarify this appears to currently also be a gnome-session
issue even after it is corrected there may still be an OpenOffice.org
issue but it is currently being masked by gnome-session being completely
broken in this respect.

I think this might be an Ubuntu problem since it does not seem to pop up
even for Gedit for me. If I remember correctly it used to do this. There
may still be a bug in OpenOffice.org as well but currently even regular
Gnome apps aren't stopping shutdown for me.

Works fine for me on Intrepid with the same version of
OpenOffice.org
Did you remember to wait at least 15 minutes between steps 3 and 4? Or
did you set the backup time below 15 minutes?
