Trying something diferent, I've downloaded the Ubuntu 8.10 for 32bit, and
booted with live CD.
For my amaze, the sound runs OK...

Do not edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base again. You want that problem line
to not be in it.
sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel
Then run the alsa-info.sh script.
You don't need to paste the output here. It actually makes it a little

That's extremely outdated. I don't think it'd work with the current
kernel. It also only lists VT1708, not VT1708B. Can you please post
the alsa-info from after modprobing? I want to compare it with SUSE's
and see what's changed between them.

That line totally broke the driver's ability to load. It was trying to
tell the hardware to behave in ways it simply can't.
After modprobing it, can you run the alsa-info script again?
And for the sake of "fun" instead of only testing gstreamer stuff, let's try

If there is no driver loaded, it has nothing to do with the mixer. I
don't know if alsamixer will even run in that case.
The thing to try first would be to manually run "sudo modprobe
snd-hda-intel" and see if it'll even let the driver load at all.

That patch is already in the 2.6.27-10 kernel which is in the Proposed
repository. You can enabled it in System -> Administration -> Software
Sources. See if installing that kernel and rebooting fixes it. If not,
