I do not have the same problem with a newer external monitor.
When I connect my older CRT, without running any commands, my X server
crashes. When I connect my newer flat panel, all works well. Please let
me know what output I can post to help diagnose.

I have confirmed that gnome only crashes when compiz is enabled. So with
KWin, perhaps it is some of the compositing code that is causing the
problem. Not sure, but wanted to report that not using compiz does stop
the gnome crash.
Also, this command worked for me this morning:
xrandr --output VGA
I can confirm 2b -- when I connect an external monitor X crashes after
10-50 seconds running kde4 in Intrepid. 2.6.27-8-generic
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)
Subsystem: Lenovo Device 20b5
Note that the crashes happen on Gnome too, but it may be only when
compiz is running.
