I do not have the same problem with a newer external monitor. When I connect my older CRT, without running any commands, my X server crashes. When I connect my newer flat panel, all works well. Please let me know what output I can post to help diagnose. -- xrandr can't change resolution in intre

I have confirmed that gnome only crashes when compiz is enabled. So with KWin, perhaps it is some of the compositing code that is causing the problem. Not sure, but wanted to report that not using compiz does stop the gnome crash. Also, this command worked for me this morning: xrandr --output VGA
