I have confirmed that gnome only crashes when compiz is enabled. So with
KWin, perhaps it is some of the compositing code that is causing the
problem. Not sure, but wanted to report that not using compiz does stop
the gnome crash.

Also, this command worked for me this morning:

xrandr --output VGA --pos 0x-800 --mode 1600x1200

It may be that --mode works when -s does not.
