It's definitely not the bug you suggested, cro.
I've cleared my dkms tree and made a clean install of fglrx. I still
have the same issue.
I've provided my Xorg.0.log with ubuntu's default xorg.conf and fglrx
installed, my Xorg.0.log with 'Driver "fglrx"' line added in 'Section
"Device"' in xorg.c
I doubt that. In that case, fglrx would work on a liveCD session. I
suppose that on a liveCD session dkms tree is empty. But I get error
while inserting the fglrx module - even before I try to start X. And I
don't have VirtualBox installed.
Anyway, I'll try your suggestion...

I got the XVideo support on radeon driver by using EXA instead of XAA.
But still, fglrx doesn't work for me at all.
Even worse, it doesn't work on friend of mine's laptop. (Mobility Radeon
X1250)
Does anywone care about this bug?? It's CRITICAL - all people with ATI
card can't use intrepid, unles
I reported this bug last night - it isn't "a while ago"...
A steps to reproduce it:
1) boot into liveCD session
2) open synaptic
3) install xorg-driver-fglrx package (and all other packages that synaptic
recommends to you)
4) hit ctrl+alt+f1 to enter tty1 console
5) sudo su
6) killall gdm
7) mak
I've tried installing from fglrx-installer, but I get the same result:
FATAL: Error inserting fglrx
(/lib/modules/2.6.27-7-generic/updates/dkms/fglrx.ko): Operation not permitted
Here's the output of lspci -vvnn:
