This has been fixed about 1 month after final release. It seemed like an
ALSA problem, as the problem was resolved after and ALSA update.

When I first encountered this, I upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10 and then got
the freeze on shutdown.
I have since did a fresh install, and I still get the freeze. The
freeze appears to be related to ALSA, as that appears to be the last
line before the freeze happens.

NVidia bug, open a new report for it (unless someone did that already).

I have also experienced this problem when shutting down / restarting a
desktop machine. It locks doing something with ALSA. I initially thought
it was the same as bug 274995, but that one relates to wireless network
adaptors. I upgraded Hardy (with all the updates it required) to
Intrepid RC from t
kernel 2.6.27.7-generic both computers
I couldn't get the hardware information by your directions, but it's a
compaq presario C700 laptop, and an emachines desktop computer about 3
years old.

What's the hardware and kernel version on the machines you're getting
this bug on. To find out what kernel you're running open a terminal ( by
going to Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and type in "uname -r"
(without the quotes) You'll see the kernel version on the next line. You
