I have also experienced this problem when shutting down / restarting a desktop machine. It locks doing something with ALSA. I initially thought it was the same as bug 274995, but that one relates to wireless network adaptors. I upgraded Hardy (with all the updates it required) to Intrepid RC from the Alternate CD. I've since returned to using Hardy. Also had problems with nVidia graphics card detection in the RC version.
