As Chris Coulson wrote, the problem can be solved by using System ->
Administration -> Authorizations. Of course, for those of us that don't
have access to that one either (due to the same problem, I assume), the
sollution is to start it with
gksudo polkit-gnome-authorization
This lets you give e
tjmoerland - your problem is most definately related to that. As you
aren't using GDM, your session isn't being registered properly with
ConsoleKit, which is why both "ck-list-sessions" and "polkit-auth
--show-obtainable" both produce no output.

I came across this topic in the fedora forum:
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=209533
It discussed loss of sound and auto-mounting of hard disks, cd-roms etc. What
triggered me was that apparently this person's gnome session wasn't properly
started as he/she chose another login man
I can confirm I have the same problem using this time FreeNX to manage a
Ubuntu 8.04.1 . On the console itself, it does show the correct behavior
for the "unlock" button. But not in remote management.
I understand that this is expected behavior but like Robert, I was

Chris, thank you for your comment. I read through some other threads and
understood that this was indeed correct behavior for remote sessions.
However, I was at the specific server's console at the beginning of the
week and I still couldn't unlock the applications. I have the same
behavior on a Vir
rjmoerland - the reason that it doesn't work for you is because you are
not on the active console when you launch users-admin, so you can't
authenticate using Policykit. This isn't a bug, and Policykit is
behaving as expected with the default Ubuntu profile.
You can change this behaviour by going
Update: I also cannot use the unlock button on a Ubuntu server 8.04.1
install that runs under VirtualBox, with the XFCE desktop and gnome-
system-tools installed.

I've only come across this report just now, so I hope it's not too late
to add some input. Here's the output on my terminal:

Andrew - Could you try running users-admin in the terminal and post any
output?
Thanks

I've seen something similar, but I think it's because my uid is below 1000.
I still can use sudo and synaptic asks for password as it should, but I can't
change time settings via gnome for example.

On a (potentially) related note: Is it likely that whatever is causing
this is also responsible for my inability to mount any USB drives?
They're listed in Nautilus, but Mount Volume does nothing - no mounting,
no error message.
