After some hunting around I found the tool pmount. When I ran pmount-hal
-t vfat it reported the followin

After spending some time trying to diagnose what the root cause of the
problem is I have found the following information.

I am also having this same problem on my Kubuntu 8.10 installed from
alpha but dist-upgraded to the latest available packages on the 18th of
October. When I attempt to mount the drive by using the New Device
Notifier it says that the superblock is invalid. After some further
inspection I found the
Restarted the laptop, same behavior, I have to manually mount the
devices.
