After some hunting around I found the tool pmount. When I ran pmount-hal
<hal-device> -t vfat it reported the followin

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ pmount-hal
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_uuid_14E5_3F07 -t vfat
Warning: device /dev/sdb1 is already handled by /etc/fstab, supplied label is
ignored
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail or so

>From that I found out that it was mounted in the /etc/fstab. After removing it
>the kde new device notifier worked perfectly.
