I can confirm that turning off compiz magically makes emacs work as
expected. That's a steep price to pay though. And why does it only
affect emacs-snapshot-gtk and not emacs22-gtk.

This happens for me, too: on a brand new installation of Intrepid (not
an upgrade from hardy, or over a previous install). I've applied all
pending package updates. The account I'm using has no individual emacs
config files, and there is no local site config yet.

Yes. This is more or less the stock configuration. I've even tried
wiping out all my dot files and dot directories to make sure it wasn't
something there.

Macbook Air's are x86.

There must be something specific about your system that causes this
issue, emacs-snapshot 20080919-1 works fine for me (and others) on
Intrepid.
Which window manager do you use? GNOME with Metacity? Which arch
is this on? Do you have any packages installed which did not
originate from the offic
