I've updated to Jaunty (which necessitated removing the proprietary
drivers) and no longer have the problem. I'll update again when the
Nvidia drivers catch up.

same problem here.
Here are the steps to reproduce it:
1) boot the system
2) login with user A
3) choose user B from the user switcher applet
Bang, the error comes out. Note that it happens only the first time
after boot, subsequent switch between users work correctly.

Rarely, it simply won't go and I have to log in and switch user from the
gnome menu

I get the same error message (after a few seconds) when trying to

I still have problems to switch user via the switcher in the upper right
corner. I get an error message:
Graphical System Error
The graphical interface did not properly start, which is needed for graphical
logins. It is likely that the X Window System or GDM is not properly configured.

It is reproducable everytime if I lock the screen and then try to switch
user from the gray panel of the screen saver. Switch user just does not
work. The screen blinks but I am sent back to the black screen with the
gray panel.
