I have spoken with the Developer working on this. The first objective is
to come up with the space needed to fit the dependencies onto the
install media. If that turns out not to be possible, his backup approach
will be to put a button in the GUI to easily install the dependency onto
the system. Th
apt-xapian-index + deps are just 2 megabytes...
We can remove some themes or some screensaver.
Or at least, provide a way for the newcomer to install it.

Yeah, I'm in favor too of installing this feature by default. Or at

After installing apt-xapian-index on Intrepid system, and restarting of
Synaptic, I get rebuilding index. After a few minutes it pops back to
Quick Search and I have the expected functionality.
If this is to be an option, it would make more sense to me to have the
dialog box invisible, rather than

Affecting xubuntu-meta. We'll seed apt-xapian-index ourselves as we
don't have CD size issues and our users enjoy the quick search
functionality.

It appears to no longer be a recommends but instead a suggest.

Its definitely not installed with with an upgrade to hardy, as for a
clean install I'm not sure.
Michael mentioned a bit about it on the mailing lists but never gave a
reason why not.
