After installing apt-xapian-index on Intrepid system, and restarting of Synaptic, I get rebuilding index. After a few minutes it pops back to Quick Search and I have the expected functionality.
If this is to be an option, it would make more sense to me to have the dialog box invisible, rather than simply grayed out.
