If you want this feature to work with the GTK file dialog file the bug
in the correct place, in Gnome BTS or at least on gtk in Ubuntu. Filing
it against OpenOffice.org isn't of much use.

WORKAROUND: run open office from the command line:
e.g.: ooffice http://www.metacritic.com/games/wii/
Great for making e-books. (it's a bit slow to load all those images
though)

Ok, I stand corrected. I just tested an Ubuntu 8.04 and 7.10, neither
OOffice could do this.
It must work under Gentoo though, because I used to do this all the
time.

I suffer from this bug too (Ubuntu 8.10, OO 2.4.1-11)
In previous versions of Open Office, it was possible to specify an URL
in the File->Open dialog. OpenOffice would then load the entire web-
page (including css, layout, images etc.) as if it was any other
document. It's not a simple fetch of
I'm re-openeing this bug because: It's a valid bug, and completely
negates one of OO's best features.

Thanks for the information. However, a help search turns up no hits for
GTK and one hit for Gnome. It is not at all clear how one goes about
reconfiguring the software to use a different file open dialog.
Further testing has shown that there is a similar issue with the Windows
version of writer.
Note it works if you turn on the OOo file open dialog instead of using
the Gnome one, so this isn't really a bug at all, unless the gtk file
open dialog is supposed to be able to open http files, which it doesn't
seem to do under any application.

Yes, it is not gedit... BUT it uses the exact same file open dialog as
gedit and all other Gnome applications, and it doesn't work in them for
me either. This is probably a gtk issue if its considered a bug at all.

I honestly thought the previous question was a joke - OO is not gedit.
>From the help (Opening Documents):
"You can also enter a URL in the File name box of the Open dialog. This
must start with the fully extended form with file:/// or ftp:// or
http://.";
This used to work just fine in previous

Is this actually supposed to work? I tried doing the same thing in "Text
Editor" gedit and it gave the same type of error message.
Thanks,
