Having the same problem with the same drive (Optiarc AD-7173A) on Ubuntu
Jaunty (AMD 64 bits) with 2.6.28-14-generic kernel, but only with DVD+RW
disks. Disks appears like blanks disk, but I can't writes them, too.

I think the problem is with HAL.
Starting from a typical system state, I inserted a store-bought DVD, and
then recorded the following:

There are a lot of reports like this in the forums. I haven't yet found
an answer.
As with others, this started with a system upgrade, in my case from
hardy to intrepid. I'm running kernel 2.6.27-11-generic. I'm getting
similar, but not identical results to most other people, and maybe this

I am seeing this problem across multiple data dvd's. I am on 2.6.27-9-generic.
Dmesg is as follows:

I am facing this issue with 2.6.27-7-generic. I see this problem with cd
buring, all cds are being mounted as read only.

have you tried with different dvd disks? does this issue appear with all of
them, or only some? have you found any patterns?

larger than 4GB. is this

please don't paste your entire dmesg output into the bug description, it is bad
practice. paste it into gedit, save as a file and attach that file. that will

installed a SATA DVD and I'm having a similar problem. Something I noted

The only difference I can think of is the file size: media with files
