Hmm, either this is already fixed in Hardy or I installed it already a
long time ago using --force. Anyway, it isn't that important (for me).
Thanks and sorry for causing all this fuss.

Please go to the bug report where it was fixed and propose for Hardy
Hi Dukat,
I would say to open a bug against libx11 specifically for Hardy LTS.
That's the one that got changed for Intrepid and got rid of that
dependency.

Hardy is not an old distribution. It is the currently active LTS
distribution and will remain so until 2010 (I guess). Ubuntu LTS is the
preferred server distribution, as servers need to be stable and not
bleeding edge. There's an official Ubuntu upgrade policy to allow
updates from one LTS to the
It's unlikely a SRU will be released for Hardy or other older
distributions. Such a dependency change in an important package could
introduce a lot of regressions. Since Intrepid has it fixed, I'll mark
the bug as fixed for Landscape as well.
If there is enough interest/momentum/reasoning/etc for
Could you please release this fix also for Ubuntu 8.04? Hardy is LTS
and thus the obvious choice for server installs. And server installs
won't be upgraded as often as user installs (I won't upgrade my server
to Intrepid).
However, I like to install ivman for removable media support in Ubuntu

The policykit-gnome dependency is gone in intrepid.

The libx11 -> x11-common dependency is indeed gone in Intrepid. I opened
bug #250619 about the policykit-gnome one.

The problem now is that policykit "recommends" policykit-gnome, and apt-
get follows this recomendation. It results in 97 extra packages being
installed on the server (even aspell!), a 19.6Mb download and 98Mb extra
spaced used after installation.
The chain is:
landscape-client -> hal -> policykit
Gustavo, we would also need to fix this for 8.04 as explained in Bug #
217101 which depends on this.

Martin pointed out that in Intrepid the dependency between libx11 and
x11-common doesn't exist anymore, so this will probably solve the issue for
future releases.
I'm not yet sure if there is interest in solving that problem for past
releases as well.

There was a quick discussion off-launchpad about this. The main issue
seems to be why libx11-6 depends on x11-common.
