I have seen hibernate fails to work when the swap partition has been changed.
I have cloned my partition with Ubuntu to a new HD, wich already had a
swappartition. Ubuntu din't see the swappartition, and also hibernate didn't
work anymore.
I think it's usefull when Ubuntu doesn have a swappar
powermanagement-interface is of the opinion that hibernate only works to
swap partitions, not swap files, so that's why the second half of
Johan's test had this result.

I installed ubuntustudio 8.04.1 without a swapspace. => hibernate-button is
there.
Then I create and activate a swapfile and define resume= and resume_offset=
kerneloptions. => Now the hibernate-button vanished.

Bug #14908 (aka bug #36577 mentioned above) has now been fixed, but
'hal' and 'gpm' do not re-query the availably of hibernation before
proceeding or displaying the option. Ideally both need modifying in
some means to support re-querying the availability of hibernate/suspend
in the cases where ACP
