I see the same behavior on a fresh Lucid netbook install. Glipper is not installed. The behavior also seems present in any standard file selection-style dialog (ie, choosing an icon for a launcher entry, hit CTRL-L to switch from the segmented buttons to text path entry, and begin typing the path)

Thanks for the tip - I've found which the steps to reproduce: it appears to be "glipper", a gnome clipboard manager. Disabling "clipboard manager" eliminates the problem; re-enabling it revives the problem. This works consistently on two different machines I've tried. Not sure who's responsible
