I see the same behavior on a fresh Lucid netbook install. Glipper is not
installed.
The behavior also seems present in any standard file selection-style
dialog (ie, choosing an icon for a launcher entry, hit CTRL-L to switch
from the segmented buttons to text path entry, and begin typing the
path)
Apparently erroneously converted into an unrelated question about wine.

Confirming this affects Fedora 9 as well.
Elashish's workaround worked for me... However disabling that option
largely defeats the purpose of using glipper for me.

Actually, scratch that. It does happen when Glipper is on the panel (I
just have to type pretty fast). Without Glipper it works fine.

Thanks for the tip - I've found which the steps to reproduce: it
appears to be "glipper", a gnome clipboard manager. Disabling
"clipboard manager" eliminates the problem; re-enabling it revives the
problem. This works consistently on two different machines I've tried.
