Right, it's indeed the same bug as bug 214914. I just fixed it:

I can also observe this bug. Steps to reproduce this for me are:
- change desktop effects from custom to none in appearance
- change back to custom.
- confirm the message that you want to keep the settings.
- jockey crashes.
I am running all updates as of april 12th, using fglrx on a X1600.

I think this Bug is directly connected to Bug #214914 ("jockey-gtk
crashed with AttributeError in enabled()"). I had both of them! The
first (this one) occurs when I try to change visual effects and the
second one, when I try to open "Hardware Driver" dialog (third-party
configuration).

Same problem in a fresh install of Hardy.
Trying to launch Jockey at all, or enable Compiz, on an ATI X1300 All-

My guess. They introduced some kind of bug in jockey, which is now the
program which cares for detecting if a closed video driver is available
and needed/installable. This program does more than it looks; it not
only cares for installing the packages, but actually configures the
whole system so
Fresh install of Hardy:
1. Try changing Visual Effects from None to Normal
2. It waits, and a crash report is detected.
3. Get message "Desktop effects could not be enabled".
4. Visual Effects is back to None.
I haven't installed any graphics drivers. Maybe it cannot be enabled
because of that, b
In my case the problem happens as follows:
1. try to change Visual Effects from None to Norma
2. get message "The composite extension is not available"
3. message won't dismiss (clicking ok does nothing)
4. clicking the window close button [x] triggers the crash.

Hey, guess what? After today's "partial upgrade," this problem has
actually gotten worse! Now when I try to enable desktop effects (at ANY
level), not only do they definitely NOT turn on, but I lose all my
window borders too. And jockey-gtk still crashes. Oh, and compizconfig-

I am running Hardy with all the current upgrades as of Apr 10 19:39 CST.
This worked on previous installs of Hardy (a week ago), possibly a
regression?
