Using Xrandr works perfectly and gives me dual head!
I was very well aware of the Xrandr extension, but since I had to tweak the
output pipelines using the --crtc switch and manually add

Xinerama is no longer supported by the -intel driver and in fact does
not run with those settings. Instead, for -intel you must use Xrandr to
configure multiple screens. For Kubuntu I think this may still need to
be done manually; some tutorials are available on the web for this,
including http:/
