Hello Brian, or anyone else affected,
Accepted openldap into jammy-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openldap/2.5.18+dfsg-0ubuntu0.22.04.2
in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.
Please help us by testing this new package.

+ OpenLDAP users who rely on the Perl backend will experience a regression
+ when updating to the latest OpenLDAP version (MRE'd a few days ago) due
+ to an upstream bug. Although back_perl is in a deprecated status, it
+ used to work before the upgrade and

upstream.

Indeed, that was the problem. Thanks, Ryan.
I'll prepare an SRU with the changes. I will also submit a patch
upstream, and this affects Debian too, so I'll file an MR there and Ryan
can review/upload it.

Hi Brian,
Thank you for taking the time to file this bug report.
I was able to reproduce it locally. Andreas Hasenack helped me come up
with a simple way to do it.
Inside a Jammy container/VM, with slapd and ldap-utils installed, issue
the following command:
# ldapmodify -H ldapi:// -Y EXTERNA
I also confirmed that the regression happens with
2.5.18+dfsg-0ubuntu0.22.04.1; the previous versions aren't affected.
