Ack. forgot to mention, also removed "ro" from the kernel line when
adding "lapic" as previous the was an error in dmesg to the effect
"failed to write...to read only"

Ok. I was finally able to resolve this problem to some extent.
Cleaned up dmesg greatly by adding "lapic" to the kernel line in kernels
2.6.22-14 and 2.6.24-12.
Also changed a config setting for cpu to "custom" in the system bios.
Finally ran "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg.

Problem with "loading hardware drivers failed" persists. Kernel is to to
