Kai's solution worked like a charm!
However, after rebooting, there were two additional duplicate entries in
my grub menu.
Ubuntu "Hardy Heron" 8.04 (Clean install)
Dell Inspiron 6400
Intel Core Duo T2500 (2 GHz)
1 GB DDR2 667 MHz RAM
ATi Mobility Radeon X1400 256 MB HyperMemory
15.4" WSXGA+ TFT-
I tried Kai's solution and Mohammed's solution. Kai's solution is not working
and Mohammeds solution doesn't display widescreen resolutions.
VGA card: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/PM/GMS, 943/940GML and 945GT Express
Memory Controller Hub (rev 03)
Fully updated Ubuntu 8.04

im using a sony vaio vgn-sz650n which has 2 graphic cards, an intel card and an
nvidia 8400 which you can switch on reboot.
when selecting the intel card, resolution is correctly detected, but when y
switch to the nvidia card and reboot, i experience the same problems.
i will give Kai's recom
Are you sure it is indeed 1280x800 and not 1024x768? I did exact same
thing on Hardy 64-bit and got 1024x768 up from initial 640x480. Same
thing with Gutsy 32-bit.

I have a similar problem on my freshly installed hardy. usplash.conf is sort of
empty:
cat /etc/usplash.conf
# Usplash configuration file
# These parameters will only apply after running update-initramfs.
uname -a
Linux joybook 2.6.24-15-generic #1 SMP Tue Apr 8 00:33:51 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linu
