I confirm this bug still exists on 8.10 using an Ipod nano white 2Gb
(new, never used before). Now I'll try to register/upgrade with iTunes

I can confirm this bug under intrepid using Rhythmbox, GTKPod and even
Floola. My 5th gen 80gb black video ipod is pretty much inaccessible.

I'm having the same problem with an iPod Nano 8Gb 3rd generation, fresh
out of the box. Does this mean that there's no Linux-only solution? I
wouldn't want to have to touch Windows just so I can get my iPod
started.

I had a similar problem (see below) on Ubuntu 8.04 but the problem
disappeared once I registered the ipod with itunes and upgraded ipod
software. I have a suspicion the problem may have something to do with
mac file system originally shipped with the ipod.

Just tested on an 8.04 upgraded ubuntu, and rhythmbox still crashes.
There error is now as follows:
$ rhythmbox

I'm having the same problem here on two Ubuntu 7.10 installations also.
I'm using an iPod Nano white 2GB, and have tried doing a complete reset
on the device. Plugging it in starts up rhythmbox, which then
immediately crashes. Uunning rhythmbox from a shell with the iPod
mounted gives this error:
