I had a similar problem (see below) on Ubuntu 8.04 but the problem
disappeared once I registered the ipod with itunes and upgraded ipod
software. I have a suspicion the problem may have something to do with
mac file system originally shipped with the ipod.

Here is my original problem. Rhythmbox would crash the moment the Ipod
was mounted. This is before I used ITunes to register the IPod.

$ rhythmbox

(rhythmbox:14209): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_type_instance_get_private: 
assertion `instance != NULL && instance->g_class != NULL' failed
Segmentation fault
