i have continued to have performance issues which are charecterised by
chrome making preload go nuts , its particularly bad when video is
involved. I discovered this by watching top when i got load spikes and
noticing that when i rebooted preload was bring the problem back.

The only evidence of an nvidia driver provided in this bug report is
nvidia-installer.log.txt which shows 367.48 was installed in 2016, and
the bug tag 'possible-manual-nvidia-install'. Both of which indicate an
unsupported driver was installed. I'm just going on the facts provided.

dude thats some amazing straw clutching, i appreciate the effort though.
I just updated and am now on 5.13.0-27-generic which is back to the
performance that regressed.

This bug report shows that you manually installed an unsupported driver
367.48 back in 2016, although that might not have been the last time. If
you do that at any point then it is not supported by Ubuntu packages and
your old driver may stop working without a new one being installed.
To ensure a
ok i've reinstalled the drivers and its faster but there is still a
regression somehwere, my system is slower.
a normal apt update should not have removed my nvidia drivers

i didn't uninstall it though , it seems to have been removed by an apt

Indeed it looks like there is no Nvidia kernel driver loaded. To fix
that please open the 'Additional Drivers' app and it will help you to
install the appropriate Nvidia driver.
