Sorry forgot to say. It would only start from the root mode from the
terminal. It would not start from the Applications GUI. It would just
sit at the bottom as it it would open and then it would not.
I am hoping that I do not have to reinstall and there would be an easier
resolution.

Could you please paste the output of: dpkg -l idle*
I suspect that you have both idle and idle-python2.5 packages installed.
None of the IDLE packages in the repositories actually have duplicated
launchers, in which case, this is not a bug.

This is because package 'idle' contains version 2.5.1-1ubuntu2, and
'idle-python2.5' package contains version 2.5.2-0ubuntu4.

Thanks for reporting. I'm unable to reproduce this with Alpha 5. Do you
also have idle-python2.4 installed? Can you post the output of "ls
/usr/share/applications/ | grep idle"?
