Okay - after a bit of playing around, I have discovered that:
* Dapper 6.06 LTS (without NM) cannot talk to the Internet properly at an MTU
of 1450
* Dapper 6.06 LTS (without NM) cannot talk to the Internet properly at an MTU
of 1000

I have just tested this properly on Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 LTS (fully
updated). The MTU setting does not seem to stop the network from working
correctly on NetworkManager 0.6.2.
