Okay - after a bit of playing around, I have discovered that:
 * Dapper 6.06 LTS (without NM) cannot talk to the Internet properly at an MTU
of 1450
 * Dapper 6.06 LTS (without NM) cannot talk to the Internet properly at an MTU
of 1000
(email checking times out, loading the first webpage takes far too long etc.)
 * That same machine works fine at both MTUs with Network-Manager-Gnome
 * A different machine (running knetworkmanager on Gentoo) does not work at an
MTU of 1450 but does work perfectly at 1000.
