Thanks for the bug report. The regression in pulseaudio update
1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.2 (particularly on some Dells) is already covered by
bug 1878327 and bug 1876065 so we should use those.

I have a Dell XPS L501X with exactly the same problem. The fix above:
> volume control -> configuration to Analog Stereo Duplex (unplugged)
I the only thing that has worked for me.
I've tried multiple other suggestions on other sites, include renaming
.config/pulse folder then reboot, force-relo
So, I've tried. Reinstalling did not help. Also, problem is even worse
on kubuntu i've tried. There is no option "Analog Stereo Duplex
(unplugged)(unavailable)" to choose and turn on sound.

This is the second time I've seen this issue reported against XFCE
recently but I can't find the other report right now. Please try:
1. Log out.
2. Ctrl+Alt+F4 and log into the text console.
3. rm -rf .config/pulse
4. Ctrl+Alt+F1 and log in again.
Has that fixed it?
** Changed in: pulseaudio
I have the same problem. However, I'm able to record audio (with
internal mic) using audacity. Also, plugged in microphone/phones work
ok.
