I confirm that VirtualBox 1.5.4 can compile the kernel modules manually.
In the changelog of version 1.5.4,it says "Linux host: compatibility fixes
with Linux 2.6.24".So I'm not sure this is a bug of ubuntu or
Virtualbox.Iguess this bug can be closed now.

You don't have to change.
I had RC5 on it for some reason.
So you are good to go :)

how should I change these two files?

The new virtualbox does fix this issue
Just remember to edit the
/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.24-2-generic/include/linux/utsrelease.h and change
the kernel version 2.6.24-2-generic
The same should be done to the
/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.24-2-generic/include/config/kernel.release
Hope it will
I can confirm the workaround does help.
Thanks!

Regarding vmware, this forum might help:
http://communities.vmware.com/thread/113938
It points to a patch at http://rtr.ca/vmware-2.6.24/ (vmware-any-any-
update-115a.tgz) that is supposed fix the source so it will compile
under 2.6.24. (I haven't tried it, though.)

kernel 2.6.24-2-generic c
I can confirm this
Below is the log file when trying to compile the virtualbox kernel
module:
cat /var/log/vbox-install.log
make KBUILD_VERBOSE=1 -C /lib/modules/2.6.24-2-generic/build
SUBDIRS=/tmp/vbox.1 SRCROOT=/tmp/vbox.1 modules
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.24-2-g
And I guess this is related to the package linux-
headers-2.6.24-2-generic
