1. Do you have a line in /etc/fstab which could be causing this problem?
Yes, the line is the same as the above.
2. Does removing it help?
Yes, mounted flawlessly immediately after commenting it out.
3. Did you install Ubuntu from removable media, for example
Still valid on a fully updated 8.04.1 system. Sorry I have to re-open
this.

Same here with LaCie 500 GB. It says:
"Invalid mount option when attempting to mount the volume 'Multimedia'."
My WB hdd works fine (usb too).
It seems that Ubuntu "thinks" the usb hard disk is a cd rom drive.
Because in gparted i can choose "mount on /media/cdrom0" an that works.
