just to figure out if the issue is related to the kernel or to the

For me, running Zesty on W230SS Clevo, it is even worse: wireless
networking stops working entirely about 1-2 hours after booting. Reboot
necessary. Still waiting for my first release upgrade without serious
graphics or networking issues, sigh :(

I'm on Zesty and my syslogs are chock-full of those sta.c:1523
stacktraces.
Below is the `lshw -c network` section that pertains to my wireless
card. This may or may not be related as it's a different wireless card;
or perhaps, rather it's an issue that affects multiple Intel cards?

I'm now on the 4.11.0-10-generic kernel, and have not seen this failure
again. However, I'll leave it up to the kernel team to see if they want to
pursue this further. You can install this kernel on Xenial by
installing linux-generic-hwe-16.04-edge.
