I put "composite" back in my xorg.conf today and I no longer see that
specific problem.
On one of my monitors, however, I noticed the 'nedit' scroll bar
sometimes flickers and doesn't show up. This was not the case with
composite disabled.

I started retracing my steps with regards to settings I had changed
since upgrading to Gutsy, and this change fixed the problem:
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection
I changed this to:
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection
And the weird nedit

I also forgot to mention, the artifacts go away when you "scroll down".
They scroll off the top of the screen like normal text and good text
comes in from the bottom. As soon as you scroll up again, however, the
entire screen is filled with repeated text once again.
