I put "composite" back in my xorg.conf today and I no longer see that specific problem.
On one of my monitors, however, I noticed the 'nedit' scroll bar sometimes flickers and doesn't show up. This was not the case with composite disabled. In any case, the problem seems to be better. Should this new problem be opened as a new bug report or as a continuation of this one?
