+1 on the 10/8 upgrade of Intrepid causing the problem for the first
time, (was using Intrepid before, as well). Command line update in a
terminal, (i.e. sudo apt-get dist-upgrade) at least lets this upgrade
set go through. Will have to see whether affects future upgrades.

I've got the same on Ubuntu Beta since yesterday. Update-manager wants
to do a partial upgrade for some reason I dont understand, and when I do
that (It also says it is a distribution upgrade. Weird) it hangs in the
cleanup stage.

I got the same thing. After killing off the window using the panel "kill
an unresponsive application" applet, I ran an update in the terminal,
and ldconfig appeared to complete successfully.

Attaching output of pstree -a.
Any idea of what we should do? Is it safe to simply kill gksu?

Same problem... Hardy -> Intrepid.
However, I upgraded to Intrepid this morning - that was fine. But, I was
told the upgrade was broken, so I partially upgraded, which is where I'm
finding the problem now.

I have the same problem, my old version KDE and Gnome works fine but
when I try to use Synaptic in KDE 4.1 It never finishes doing the tasks.
When it does that my system becomes unusable and I can't start new
applications. I can use forcequit but I cant start anything else.

I looked into kdesudo and I think the problem is that it blocks the
"SIGCHLD" handler in line 159 of kdesudo.cpp. This prevents synaptic to
get the signals it needs. If I remove that line it works.
I strongly suspect that this is a problem with kdesudo, gksu does not
block SIGCHLD.

It turns out that the "child_exiited" function is not called in synaptic
that signals it when dpkg was finished.
Here is the relevant code:

g_signal_connect(G_OBJECT(reaper), "child-exited",
G_CALLBACK(child_exited),
