+1 on the 10/8 upgrade of Intrepid causing the problem for the first time, (was using Intrepid before, as well). Command line update in a terminal, (i.e. sudo apt-get dist-upgrade) at least lets this upgrade set go through. Will have to see whether affects future upgrades.
