I had deleted everything. I also used an existing partition (the machine
had other os's as well).
The machine I had this problem has since broken down, so I can't test
this anymore. Also there has been a new release. This probably means
that this bug can be closed as no longer relevant.

Have you manually removed system folders (i.e. everything except /home)
from the target partition between partition manager stage and base
install? If so, you have also removed partman's new fstab file. Check
the contents of /etc/fstab when prompted for CD. It might be blank with
just one line read

I originally burned with a different machine (a Macbook). I made the
software check the burning result and it too said that the disc was OK.
I can attempt a third machine as well if it is considered necessary.

I hate to keep running you around in troubleshooting this but are you at
all able to try the media on a different machine? I wonder if its the
hardware considering the disc image is valid. Perhaps within a virtual
machine?

As I said in the summary I had checked the media. Just to be sure I
checked it again, both with the check CD option and manually with
md5sum. All checks indicate that the disc is intact.
I tried the install again and it still fails in the same way.

Can you use the "check CD for defects" option on the initial CD boot
menu? This might be able to tell us whether or not the CD image is
corrupted or not and narrow down the issues.

I used the final Gutsy alternative install CD that I burned myself. I
have not done anything to the disk, machine or target partition since
this, so I can probably duplicate it if necessary.

Can you advise on which CD build you were installing from? Was it the
latest final release or one of the beta/daily builds? Can you duplicate
this bug now with a fresh install or with a verified working CD image?
