The too large resolution is a known bug (it's occurring on one of my
laptops) and it's reported somewhere else. Upload the output of "sudo
lspci -vvnn" of both machines and let's wait. You could try to boot from
each version of Ubuntu that comes out and see if the bug is fixed

I have now had time to test the Hardy Heron 8.04 Beta on both of my
machines with ATI video cards. The situation has improved since last
time in the sense that it will now boot without using safemode, but it
doesn't detect the correct resolution of my Hansol 18'' monitors. This

I can now add that Xubuntu has the same problem with the Radeon 9250,
but not the Radeon 7000. And I meant to say 1280x1024 not 1280x800!
