I can now add that Xubuntu has the same problem with the Radeon 9250, but not the Radeon 7000. And I meant to say 1280x1024 not 1280x800!
I am very frustrated as I have never had any problems with Ubuntu or any of its derivatives on any of my computers although I have with some other distros.
