Well, almost. In case of wide screen movies it left a little bit of
black stripe, but the movie was stretched out vertically. If the movie
aspect was 1.1 then it was stretched horizontally and filled the screen.
I don't understand why, because the same settings work when I compile my
own. So it may
Hm, so in your case, *all* the videos are played with the same aspect
ratio, which is the aspect ratio of the monitor? and when you go to full
screen it fills the entire screen. (In that case, my problem is
different.)

I'm not sure, that it is the same problem. In my case the Ubuntu package
was simply filling up the whole screen regardless of the AR of the movie
or the monitor.

I have to use "monitoraspect=1920/1200", otherwise the people appear
wider. I guess mplayer somehow assumes that the 1920x1200 monitor has a
4:3 aspect ratio.
