I am currently using SCIM now in Ubuntu 9.10 amd64 in both Firefox and
Thunderbird and it works completely fine in all my three computers. No
more crashes.

I am using Ubuntu Jaunty 9.10, Mozilla 3.0.10 and SCIM Smart Common
Input Method 1.4.7. I have similar problems as the ones previously

I tested some things, and found the following:
If I log out of Ubuntu, and log in again with Japanese or Chinese as
session language, firefox will not crash even though scim-anthy is on.
The crash only happens when i have english as session language of
ubuntu.

trigger/workaround for this bug is "System -> Preferences -> SCIM Input
Method Setup" - "FrontEnd -> Global Setup -> Share the same input method
among all applications" as described in comment 19.

Just to double confirm, turning off the shared input has fixed my
problem in Hardy.
I can still use Japanese in Firefox and Thunderbird, but it's no longer
crashes. Thanks for the fix.

I have just tested it again on a fresh Ubuntu Hardy installation from the daily
image from yesterday.
installed scim-anthy, opened firefox3, activated Anthy input method and pressed
Ctrl+N to open a new window. Works without problems here.
Installed versions:
libanthy0 9100d-1
scim-anthy 1.2.4-1u
So, after upgrading to 8.04 Hardy Heron Xubuntu, the bug still exists.
It crashes both Thunderbird 2.0.0.12 and Firefox 3.b5 upon opening new
windows. As we are approaching a LTS release, it would be really cool to
get this fixed... :/

I just upgraded my Ubuntu from 7.10 Gutsy to 8.04 Hardy, but I am still
experiencing the same problem (with both Firefox 2.0.0.12 and

Works for me in the latest versions in Hardy.
Tested with scim-anthy being active, both firefox3 and thunderbird seem
to be fine. I tested the actions Nicolas described above.
Can you please test with the current Hardy version and confirm if it
works for you now or not?

I confirm that I have exactly this problem with Firefox (I'm not running
Thunderbird) using fully-updated fresh install of Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10 with
SCIM and Anthy. If Firefox spawns a new window (eg "About..." or Tools >

Rupprecht mentioned did *not* work for me.
Although the Japanese Team's repo did update Anthy and a couple other files,
Thunderbird continued to crash.
