I was about to file a very similar request (only I was gonna name it
fast user switch applet is one pixel too high)
Even the screenshot I'd taken is very similar. Glad to see I'm not the
only one who noticed.

This bug is still present in intrepid, and much more noticeable in the
default install since the fast-user-switcher applet is now placed next
to the clock.

Thank you for your bug. What version of Ubuntu and locale do you use? I
don't get this issue on my gutsy installion all the panel applets I
tried have the text aligned, verified using gimp and drawing a selection
line. Could you make a screenshot of the bug?
