This bug is still present in intrepid, and much more noticeable in the default install since the fast-user-switcher applet is now placed next to the clock.
Here's a zoomed screenshot showing the problem in detail. Reading from the upstream bug report, it seems like this is caused because the clock applet text is inside a button.
