Removing the "quiet splash" boot option (both for live cd and final
install) and replacing it with "nosplash" fixes the above problems for
my setup.

I have the same problem , including flashing LEDs , for Sapphire Ati
Radeon X700 PCI-e. Screen attached to DVI.
I can work around this problem by manually picking a VGA resolution in
