Ah, now I'm making progress! I read on
http://my.opera.com/area42/blog/unique-look-ubuntu-look
that you can give QT3 apps a human look-and-feel by getting this file:
http://files.myopera.com/area42/files/qtrc
and (slightly different from the instructions he gave), use it to replace the
one in ~/.
I was able to reproduce the issue and find a sub-optimal way to deal
with the problem.

Ah, OK, I figured out what the problem is; virtualbox-ose depends on
libqt3-mt to give it its 'look-and-feel' For some reason, that's not
configured in the same way that regular KDE apps (e.g. konqueror) are in
Ubuntu. If you install qt3-qtconfig and run "qtconfig" you can change
the fonts, widge
And another, with subpixel smoothing turned on an ruining the VBox
screen (while it clearly improves the rest of the system).
